This safari tour will take you to the largest game reserve and 2nd largest conservation area in Africa sized at 5,000 square kilometers. This is 4 times bigger than the Serengeti and larger than the entire country of Switzerland. Welcome to Selous Game Reserve! This reserve is one of the most remote ones in Tanzania, hence least visited parks in Africa.

Day 1

Our driver guide will pick you up and drive you to Selous Game Reserve with picnic lunch to be served on the way. We arrive at the camp early in the afternoon, settle in, and we head for a boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River. The river is formed by the confluence of the Kilombero and Luwegu rivers. It is approximately 600 kilometers (370mi) long and here you will see plentiful hippos and crocodiles. The big herds of Tanzanian Elephants are also attracted by the River Rufiji that flows through the reserve. Some 350 bird species can also be found in the Selous Game Reserve.

Day 2

After breakfast, we depart for morning and afternoon game drive at the Selous Game Reserve. The Selous Game Reserve is the largest in Africa, covering 54,600 square kilometers. The reserve gets its name from the hunter and explorer Frederick Courtney Selous. He was killed here during World War 1. Selous is famous for elephants. Other species commonly seen are lions, wild dogs, buffaloes, bushbuck, impalas, elands, baboons, zebras and greater kudus. It was originally set aside as a hunting area where animals are abundant but more shy than the Northern Parks.

Day 3

Today, we head to Ruaha National Park where we will have a game drive in the afternoon. The name of the park is derived from the Great Ruaha River, which flows along its South-Eastern margin and is the focus for game-viewing. Ruaha is believed to have a high concentration of elephants than any National Park in East Africa. It is also a place where, magnificent mammals like Kudu, Sable and Roan antelopes can easily be spotted in Miombo woodland. The park is also a habitat for endangered wild dogs. Other animals in the park include lions, leopards, cheetah, giraffes, zebras, elands, impala, bat eared foxes and jackals.

Day 4 & 5

After breakfast, you dedicate these days in Ruaha for morning and afternoon game drives. You will have all meals at your lodge. Ruaha National Park (10.300km²) is the most visited National Park in the southern part of Tanzania. Due to its size and the fact that the South of Tanzania is less visited than the northern parks, you still have ample of space and you will see hardly any safari vehicles.

Day 6

After breakfast, we head for a game drive en route back to Mikumi. This is to make our way to the Selous Game Reserve the following day as Mikumi is bordered to the south with the Selous Game Reserve, the two areas forming a unique ecosystem.

Day 7

After breakfast, we head towards the Selous Game Reserve through Matemwe gate. After Morogoro, you will leave the tar road and drive along the Uluguru Mountains through remote villages. Depending on our time of arrival, we can go on a short game drive.

Day 8 & 9

Selous Game Reserve is the biggest wildlife conservation area in Africa and forms together with the bordering Mikumi and Udzungwa National Parks an area which is as big as Switzerland! Today, you drive through the northern part of the reserve which is open for photo safaris. Optional Activities such as walking in the wilderness or boat cruise can be arranged at extra cost.

Day 10

After breakfast, we drive towards the Indian Ocean through Mtemere Gate and at around noon you will reach Dar Es Salaam. Transfer to airport or hotel at your own arrangement.

The park contains a subspecies of giraffe, that biologists consider the link between the Masai giraffe and the reticulated or Somali giraffe. Day 1

In the morning, pick up from hotel or airport in Dar es Salaam and travel 283km to Mikumi National Park where you will arrive in time for lunch. After lunch, you go for afternoon game drives in the park and see abundant wildlife such as Elephant, Lion, Wild dog, Zebras, Hyena, Buffalo, Wildebeest, Eland, Hartebeest, Crocodile, Lizard and other residents.

Day 2

Breakfast followed by morning and afternoon game drives in Mikumi National Park for further exploration. This hosts over 300 species of birds and the fauna includes many species characteristic of the African savannah. According to local guides at Mikumi, chances of seeing a lion who climbs a tree trunk is larger than in Manyara (famous for being one of the few places where the lions exhibit this behavior).

The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest faunal reserves of the world, located in the south of Tanzania. It was named after Englishman Sir Frederick Selous, a famous big game hunter and early conservationist, who died at Beho Beho in this territory in 1917 while fighting against the Germans during World War I. The Selous was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature.

The reserve covers a total area of 54,600 km2 and has additional buffer zones. Within the reserve no permanent human habitation or permanent structures are permitted. Some of the typical animals of the savanna (are African Bush Elephants, Black Rhino, Hippo, Lions, Wild Dogs, Cheetahs, Cape Buffaloes, Giraffes and Nile crocodiles) can be found in this park in larger numbers than in any other African game reserve or national park.
